Spiritual Significance
The lamp features Goddess Kamakshi (a form of Parvati/Lalitha Tripurasundari) seated in a majestic posture, often flanked by sugarcanes and parrots.
The "Kula Deivam": If a family does not know who their ancestral deity (Kula Deivam) is, they worship the Kamakshi Vilakku, as she encompasses all forms of the Divine Mother.
The Single Flame: It usually has a single spout for one wick, representing the Ekagrata (one-pointed focus) of the devotee toward the Divine.
Rituals for First-Time Use
If you have just bought a new Brass Kamakshi Diya, it must be "awakened" before regular use:
Purification: Wash the lamp with water mixed with a little turmeric and kumkum.
Naming: In some traditions, the lamp is formally "invited" into the home as a member of the family.
The First Light: It is auspicious to light it for the first time on a Friday or a Pournami (Full Moon day).
